Christmas Through The Eyes of the Humble

Christmas in the Unexpected: Mary's Faith Over Doubt
Christmas is a season filled with surprises and unexpected moments. But for the main characters in the biblical Christmas story, these unexpected encounters were far more profound than any gift under a tree. Today we explore Mary's remarkable response when the angel Gabriel appeared to her with news that would change everything.
When God's Presence Meets Holy Living
The Message of His Presence
Gabriel appeared to Mary with a powerful greeting: "Greetings, favored woman. The Lord is with you." This wasn't just a polite hello - it was a declaration that God's presence was upon her life.
Mary was no ordinary young woman. She was a virgin living in purity, engaged but keeping herself holy before God. Her commitment to righteousness had positioned her to experience God's presence in an extraordinary way.
How Holiness Invites God's Presence
There's a direct connection between living holy and experiencing God's presence. Throughout Scripture, we see this pattern:
Old Testament priests had to be purified before entering God's presence
Moses told the people to purify themselves for three days before God would appear on Mount Sinai
The Bible tells us "in his presence there is fullness of joy"
When we walk in purity through the power of the Holy Spirit, we position ourselves to experience God's presence, which brings joy and strength to our lives.
What Does It Mean to Ponder God's Word?
Material to Ponder
When Gabriel appeared, Mary was "confused and disturbed" and "tried to think what the angel could mean." She didn't dismiss the message - she pondered it.
God's Word and His promises are meant to be pondered, meditated upon, and studied. This is how faith grows and doubt dies. The book of Joshua instructs us to "study this book of instruction continuously. Meditate on it day and night so that you will be sure to obey everything written."
Building Faith Through Scripture
Mary "stored all these things in her heart" and pondered them. When we spend time in God's Word, meditating on His teachings and promises, we build the kind of faith that can overcome doubt.
The best way to understand Scripture is to go through it verse by verse, in context, allowing the stories and teachings to build our faith systematically.
The Difference Between Mary's Faith and Zechariah's Doubt
A Marvelous Promise
Gabriel told Mary she would conceive and give birth to Jesus, who would be "very great and will be called the Son of the Most High." This child would receive "the throne of his ancestor David" and "his kingdom will never end."
This was an incomprehensible promise to a teenage girl, yet Mary believed it.
Two Different Questions
When Zechariah received his promise about John the Baptist, he asked: "How can I be sure this will happen?"
When Mary received her promise, she asked: "How can this happen?"
The difference is crucial. Zechariah doubted whether it would happen. Mary simply wondered how it would happen. She didn't doubt God's power or promise - she was curious about the method.
Do You Believe in Miracles?
The Miracle of His Power
Gabriel explained to Mary: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God."
Mary believed in a miracle that was humanly impossible. She trusted in God's supernatural power to accomplish what seemed impossible.
Where Are the Miracles Today?
Sometimes, like Gideon in the Old Testament, we ask: "Where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about?" When we don't see God's blessings immediately, doubt can creep in.
But Scripture is filled with miracles - from the Old Testament through the Gospels and the book of Acts. Reading and pondering these accounts builds our faith and reminds us that our God is still a miracle-working God.
Is Anything Too Hard for the Lord?
A Matter of Possibility
Gabriel declared to Mary: "Nothing will be impossible with God." This isn't just a nice saying - it's a fundamental truth about God's character and power.
Throughout Scripture, this question appears repeatedly: "Is anything too hard for the Lord?" The answer is always the same - nothing is impossible with God.
What God Cannot Do
Interestingly, Scripture tells us there are two things God cannot do:
It is impossible for God to lie
It is impossible to please God without faith
God will always keep His word, but we must respond with faith. Faith is our part in the equation.
Are You Willing to Say Yes to God?
A Magnificent Proclamation
Mary's response to Gabriel was simple but profound: "I am the Lord's servant. May everything you have said about me come true."
This is the same heart attitude we see throughout Scripture:
Abraham left everything to follow God's call
Moses led Israel out of Egypt despite his initial hesitation
The disciples left their jobs and homes to follow Jesus
Jesus himself prayed, "Yet I want your will to be done, not mine"
What Is God Asking of You?
God may be calling you to believe for something that seems impossible. He may be asking you to step out in faith in a specific area of your life. The question is: Are you willing?
Mary's willingness to follow God's plan led to joy and praise. Her faith became the foundation for the first Christmas carol, where she proclaimed: "Oh, how my soul praises the Lord. How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior."
Life Application
This week, choose to respond like Mary rather than Zechariah when facing God's promises and calls on your life. Instead of asking "How can I be sure?" ask "How will this happen?" - moving from doubt to curious faith.
Commit to spending time in God's Word daily, pondering His promises and allowing Scripture to build your faith. When you encounter delays or challenges, remember that delaying does not mean denying.
Ask yourself these questions:
What is God asking me to believe for that seems impossible?
Am I willing to say "yes" to God's call on my life, even when I don't understand how it will work out?
How can I cultivate the kind of holy living that invites God's presence into my daily life?
What doubts do I need to surrender so that faith can grow in their place?
You can have a moment - even an unexpected moment - where you experience the kind of faith that will overcome doubt. Let this Christmas season be a time when your faith grows stronger and your trust in God's impossible possibilities deepens.
