When God Writes on the Wall
Have you ever had God grab your attention in an unusual way? Sometimes He uses unexpected circumstances to wake us up, just like He did in Daniel 5. It’s where the phrase “the handwriting on the wall” comes from.
Belshazzar, king of Babylon, was throwing a wild party while his kingdom was under attack. In the middle of his drunken feast, a hand appeared and wrote a mysterious message on the wall. No one could interpret it—until Daniel was called in. God had a word of judgment for Belshazzar: his time was up.
This story shows us that God still cares about the same things today that He cared about then. Pastor Randy reminded us of three truths that give us a heavenly perspective.
1. God Cares About What Is Holy
Belshazzar took the sacred cups from God’s temple and used them for sin. He treated holy things as common.
We can do the same if we’re not careful.
Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Our gifts are meant for God’s glory, not wasted potential.
God’s Word is holy—meant to guide us, not be twisted for convenience.
Worship is holy—it’s not just singing, it’s an encounter with God’s presence.
Holiness isn’t an outdated idea. Scripture says, “You must be holy because I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16).
2. God Cares That We Learn From the Past
Daniel reminded Belshazzar of what happened to his ancestor Nebuchadnezzar, who was humbled by God for his pride. But Belshazzar ignored the lesson and repeated the same sin.
How often do we do the same? We watch others stumble and think, “That won’t happen to me.” But pride blinds us.
The Israelites did this too—complaining, rebelling, forgetting miracle after miracle. Instead of learning, they wandered for 40 years. The question for us is: are we living wisely, or are we repeating the same mistakes?
3. God Cares About Judgment
Belshazzar’s story ends with judgment. His kingdom fell that very night. His time ran out.
One day, time will run out for this world too. Jesus said no one knows the hour, but He is coming again. The question isn’t if—it’s when.
For those in Christ, His return is our great hope! For those who ignore Him, it will be sudden and final.
The Handwriting on Your Wall
So what is God writing on the wall of your life?
Is He warning you to stop treating holy things as common?
Is He calling you to finally learn from your past?
Is He reminding you that time is short and eternity is real?
At the heart of this passage is a simple truth: Pride leads to destruction, but a relationship with Jesus leads to life.
Let’s choose to live with a heavenly perspective—valuing what is holy, learning from the past, and staying ready for Christ’s return.
