Stop Trying Harder

You Cannot Win a Spiritual Battle with Natural Strength
There are battles in life that willpower alone simply cannot win. You can manage your schedule, improve your habits, and push through hard seasons with sheer determination. But there are certain struggles, deep ones, that no amount of effort or self-discipline can fully overcome. That is where the Holy Spirit comes in.
Why Willpower Is Not Enough
Most of us are good at getting things done. Work hard, get results. Show up consistently, grow over time. That formula works in a lot of areas of life. But when we try to apply that same approach to our spiritual battles, we often come up short.
There are things inside of us that willpower alone cannot change. Anxiety that won't quit. Anger that keeps coming back. Hidden struggles we haven't told anyone about. Telling yourself to "just stop worrying" is not a solution. It is a cliche. And deep down, you already know that.
Managing behavior is not the same as being changed from the inside out.
What Is the Holy Spirit and Why Does He Matter?
The Holy Spirit is often the overlooked member of the Trinity. People feel comfortable with God the Father and with Jesus, but the Holy Spirit can feel mysterious or even strange. The truth is, He is not optional for the Christian life. He is essential.
Galatians 5:16-18 puts it plainly:
"So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses." - Galatians 5:16-18 New Living Translation (NLT)
If you feel a conflict inside between what you want to do and what you know is right, that is actually a good sign. It means the Spirit is at work in you.
What Does It Mean to Walk Closely with the Holy Spirit?
Walking with the Holy Spirit is not complicated, but it does require consistency. It means staying connected to Jesus through prayer, reading Scripture, and showing up in community. When you stay connected to Him daily, His fruit begins to flow naturally from your life.
The Christian life is not about how strong you can become. It is about how closely you can walk with the Holy Spirit.
What Is the Fruit of the Spirit and How Do You Get It?
Galatians 5:22-25 describes what a Spirit-filled life looks like:
"But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to His cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit's leading in every part of our lives." - Galatians 5:22-25 New Living Translation (NLT)
Notice something important here. This is called the fruit of the Spirit, not the fruit of determination or the fruit of discipline. You do not produce this fruit by trying harder. You produce it by releasing more.
The fruit of the Spirit is evidence that the Spirit is winning the battle inside of you.
When someone tells you that you need to get better at patience or kindness, the real answer is not to try harder at those things. The real answer is to get closer to Jesus. The fruit follows the connection.
What Weapons Does the Holy Spirit Give Us?
The Holy Spirit does not just change us from the inside. He also equips us for the battles we face.
The Weapon of Attitude and Worship
Acts 16:25 gives us a powerful picture of this:
"Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening." - Acts 16:25 New Living Translation (NLT)
Paul was in prison, and his response was to pray and worship. His attitude was unshakable because the Holy Spirit was in Him. His battle did not determine his response. That is a weapon. Their victory started before the earthquake ever came.
Worship is not just a Sunday morning activity. It is an act of spiritual warfare. When you worship, you are fighting back against everything the enemy is throwing at you.
The Weapon of God's Word
Hebrews 4:12 says:
"For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and Spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires." - Hebrews 4:12 New Living Translation (NLT)
Scripture is the sword of the Spirit. It cuts through confusion and exposes what is really going on inside of us. Filling yourself with God's Word before the battle comes is not optional. It is preparation.
The Weapon of Prayer
Prayer is not passive. It is active engagement with God. Crying out to Him, being honest about where you are struggling, and asking Him to move in your life is one of the most powerful things you can do. Earnest prayer, the kind that feels a lot like begging, is not weakness. It is faith in action.
Three Practical Steps to Fight in the Spirit's Power
1. Identify Where You Have Been Fighting in Your Own Strength
Take an honest look at the areas of your life where you have been trying to handle things alone. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you. It can be as simple as saying, "Holy Spirit, will you show me where I need help?" He will answer, often through Scripture, through a trusted person in your life, or through a quiet impression on your heart.
2. Start Paying Attention to Your Fruit
Look at how you are treating the people around you. Not to condemn yourself, but to get an honest read on where your connection with Jesus stands. The fruit of your life reflects the depth of that relationship. When the fruit is off, the answer is not to try harder. It is to draw closer.
3. Put Something in the Spirit's Hand
Give the Holy Spirit something to work with. Get into Scripture before the battle comes. Do not wait for the arrow to fly before looking for your sword. Feed yourself spiritually throughout the week, not just on Sundays. Invite Jesus into the battle with you, not just as a last resort, but as your first response.
The Goal Is Not Better Behavior. It Is Real Change.
The goal of spiritual warfare is not to look better on the outside. It is to be genuinely transformed from the inside out. When people notice something different about you and ask why, the answer should be simple: the Holy Spirit is changing me in ways I cannot fully explain.
That kind of change does not come from managing yourself better. It comes from surrendering more fully to Him.
Life Application
This week, stop trying to fight one of your hardest battles alone. Pick one area of your life where you have been relying on willpower, and intentionally surrender it to the Holy Spirit. Spend a few minutes each day this week asking Him to lead you in that specific area. Open your Bible, even for just a few minutes, and let His Word speak into that struggle before the pressure of the day hits.
Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
- Where in my life am I still trying to win a spiritual battle with my own natural strength?
- When I look at the fruit of the Spirit, which ones feel most absent in my life right now, and what does that tell me about my connection with Jesus?
- Am I feeding myself spiritually throughout the week, or am I only showing up on Sundays and wondering why nothing is changing?
- What would it look like for me to genuinely surrender this battle to the Holy Spirit instead of trying to manage it on my own?
You were never designed to fight these battles alone. The Holy Spirit is not a last resort. He is the power source you were always meant to rely on.
