The Name That Saves

The Name of Jesus Doesn't Just Help You. It Transforms You.

It's easy to admire what Jesus does from a distance. But there's a deeper question worth sitting with: Are you willing to let Him do the real work in your life? This post walks through what it looks like to move beyond admiring Jesus and into actually surrendering to Him.

What Does It Mean to Ignore Your Spiritual "Check Engine Light"?

Most of us know what it feels like to see a warning light come on and just... keep driving. We tell ourselves it will work itself out. We put a piece of tape over it so we don't have to look at it anymore.

The same thing happens in our spiritual lives. The Holy Spirit is constantly at work, nudging us, convicting us, pointing out the things that need attention. But the longer we ignore that conviction, the easier it becomes to live without feeling it at all.

That's a dangerous place to be. Not because God gives up on us, but because we start to drift without even realizing it.

Can You Be Amazed by Jesus and Still Reject Him?

In Acts 3, a man who had been unable to walk from birth was healed through Peter and John. The crowd went wild. They were stunned. But they were staring at Peter and John like they were the source of the miracle.

Peter immediately redirected them:

"People of Israel, what is so surprising about this? And why stare at us as though we had made this man walk by our own power or godliness? For it is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of all our ancestors, who has brought glory to His servant Jesus by doing this." - Acts 3:12-13 New Living Translation (NLT)

Peter refused to let the miracle become about himself. Because if people walk away impressed with Peter, nothing changes for eternity. But if they walk away knowing Jesus, everything changes.

Here's the hard truth: you can be amazed by what Jesus does and still avoid surrendering to who He is. Showing up to church, reading your Bible, going through the motions. None of that is the same as actually responding to what God is saying to you personally.

Is Jesus Really the Only Way?

Peter makes it clear in Acts 4:12 that salvation is found in no one else. Jesus Himself said He is the only way to the Father. That's not a popular statement in today's culture, but it's what Scripture teaches.

Jesus isn't one option among many. He is the option. And He's not asking for lukewarm interest. He wants a real, surrendered relationship.

The good news is that even the people who crucified Jesus were told they were not too far gone. Peter looked at the very crowd responsible for Jesus' death and said:

"Friends, I realize that what you and your leaders did to Jesus was done in ignorance." - Acts 3:17 New Living Translation (NLT)

If Jesus extended mercy to them, He extends it to you too.

What Is Repentance and Why Does It Matter?

After confronting the crowd, Peter doesn't leave them in their guilt. He gives them a path forward:

"Repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. Then times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord." - Acts 3:19 New Living Translation (NLT)

Repentance is simply turning in a different direction. It's not a fiery preacher yelling at you. It's God, in love, saying: the way you're going is hurting you. I have something better. Just turn around.

Repentance leads to refreshment. That's the order. You don't get the refreshing first and then maybe think about changing. The refreshing comes from the repentance.

Why Do So Many Christians Feel Spiritually Drained?

Sin drains you. Hidden sin especially. When there are things in your life that you've pushed down, ignored, or covered up, they quietly drain your energy, your joy, and your sense of freedom.

When you bring those things into the light, something shifts. James 5:16 says that when we confess our sins to one another, we are healed. That's not just a suggestion. It's how God designed us to walk in freedom.

You were not made to do this alone. God built us for community. Trying to overcome sin in isolation, without accountability, without people who know your real story, is like trying to fight a battle with one hand tied behind your back.

Find people you trust. Get into a small group. Don't take a vacation from your spiritual life just because life gets busy.

Don't Ask God to Bless What He Came to Transform

Peter closes his message with this:

"When God raised up His servant, He sent Him first to you people of Israel, to bless you by turning each of you back from your sinful ways." - Acts 3:26 New Living Translation (NLT)

The blessing is not God making your sin more comfortable. The blessing is not God helping you stay exactly where you are. The blessing is transformation. A new way of living. A life that actually looks like what He created you for.

Many people want Jesus as Savior but not as Lord. They want the forgiveness without the surrender. But those two things go together. He is both Savior and Lord, and He wants to lead every part of your life.

What Does Surrendering to Jesus Actually Look Like?

It doesn't require having everything figured out. It starts with honesty. Something like: Jesus, I don't know what I'm doing, but I know I need You. I surrender this moment to You.

And then you do it again tomorrow. And the day after that. Surrender is not a one-time event. It's a daily decision to give Him more and more of your life as you grow.

Moses led Israel out of physical slavery in Egypt. Jesus leads us out of spiritual slavery to sin. Moses pointed people to God's commands. Jesus is the Word made flesh. He is the command. And we must listen to Him.

Life Application

This week, take an honest look at the warning lights in your spiritual life. Don't cover them up. Don't keep driving and hope they go away on their own.

Pick one area where you know the Holy Spirit has been nudging you, and take a real step toward repentance. That might mean a quiet conversation with God, a hard conversation with someone you trust, or finally asking for help with something you've been carrying alone.

The refreshing you've been looking for is on the other side of the repentance you've been putting off.

Ask yourself:

  • Is there an area of my life where I've been admiring Jesus from a distance instead of actually surrendering to Him?
  • What "check engine light" have I been ignoring, and what would it look like to finally address it this week?
  • Am I trying to get God's blessing while holding onto something He's asking me to let go of?
  • Do I have people in my life who know my real struggles, or am I trying to walk this out alone?
