Fasting: The Spiritual Tool That Can Transform Your Faith

Have you ever felt like your faith has lost its edge? Maybe you're still showing up to church, still doing all the "right" things, but something feels dull inside. You're going through the motions, but that fire you once had for Jesus seems to have dimmed. If this resonates with you, there's a powerful spiritual tool that can help reignite your passion and intensify your relationship with God: fasting.

Why Do We Lose Our Spiritual Edge?

Over time, all Christians experience dry seasons in their faith. We live in a culture that celebrates constant motion - if you're busy and doing things, you get recognized. We think busy equals importance, hustle equals success, and noise equals productivity. But in our spiritual lives, this mindset can actually work against us.

Sometimes we think the answer to spiritual dullness is to do more - listen to more podcasts, read more books, attend more events. While these things can be good within boundaries, sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is to stop.

What Is Fasting and Why Does It Work?

Fasting is simply choosing to deny your flesh so that your spirit can become more sensitive to God. It's not about punishment or earning God's approval - you don't need to fast to go to heaven. Rather, fasting is a choice, a tool that Jesus himself used to draw closer to the Father.

Abraham Lincoln once said, "Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe." Fasting is like sharpening the axe of our spiritual lives. It prepares us for what God wants to do in our lives by breaking our routines and exposing our dependence on things other than God.

How Fasting Transforms Your Prayer Life

When we fast, we interrupt our normal routine. We become hungry, and when we get hungry, we're forced to turn our attention somewhere. If we do this spiritually, we turn to God. This creates a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit that we might not otherwise experience.

Many people find prayer boring or difficult, but fasting can revolutionize your prayer life. When you're hungry and turn to God instead of food, you'll find yourself desperately needing His help and presence in a way that transforms your communication with Him.

What Does Jesus Say About Fasting?

In Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus gives us clear instructions about fasting: "'And when you fast, don't make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.'" - Matthew 6:16-18 New Living Translation (NLT)

Notice that Jesus says "when you fast," not "if you fast." He assumes fasting will be part of a believer's spiritual practice. But He's also clear about the motivation - it's not about getting attention from people, but about connecting with God in private.

Avoiding Performance-Based Christianity

Jesus immediately addresses one of the biggest problems in Christian culture: performance-based spirituality. The Pharisees wanted people to notice them fasting so they would appear more spiritual. This is exactly what we must avoid.

Fasting is not primarily about people seeing your sacrifice - it's about God seeing your heart. As 1 Samuel 16:7 tells us: "'The Lord doesn't see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'" - 1 Samuel 16:7 New Living Translation (NLT)

Biblical Examples of Fasting

Throughout Scripture, we see fasting used for various purposes:

  • Ezra fasted for protection and guidance before a dangerous journey
  • Jehoshaphat proclaimed a fast when Judah was under threat
  • Church leaders were appointed after praying and fasting

In Acts 13:2-3, we read: "'One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Appoint Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.' So after more fasting and prayer, the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their way.'" - Acts 13:2-3 New Living Translation (NLT)

There's something powerful about fasting that creates spiritual sensitivity and helps us hear from God more clearly.

The Right Way to Fast

Don't Fast While Living in Rebellion

Isaiah 58 gives us one of the strongest rebukes in the Bible against fake spirituality. God doesn't want us fasting externally while living rebelliously internally. Isaiah 58:6-7 says: "'No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.'" - Isaiah 58:6-7 New Living Translation (NLT)

Don't deny yourself food while refusing to love people. Jesus made it clear that we must love God and love people - these are equally important.

Make a Plan

If you want to succeed at fasting, don't just wing it. Make a systematic plan. Decide what you'll fast from, when you'll start and end, and what your goals are. Write it down and tell trusted people who can support you.

Always be wise about fasting - if you have medical conditions, consult your doctor first. The goal is spiritual growth, not physical harm.

When Should You Consider Fasting?

Consider fasting when you:

  • Need clarity for a major (or minor) decision
  • Need breakthrough in your life
  • Feel like your flesh has become too loud
  • Want to regain your spiritual edge
  • Have become spiritually exhausted or numb
  • Find your prayer life has dried up

Three Key Challenges

1. Recognize Where You've Lost Your Edge

Maybe you didn't even realize you'd lost your spiritual edge until now. That first day you surrendered to Jesus, you had fire and passion. But life happened, and things got tough. Fasting isn't the answer itself - it's the tool that helps you get to Jesus, who is the answer.

2. Stop Trying to Power Through in Your Own Strength

A dull axe requires more effort. Some people are exhausted because they're trying to force spiritual fruit without spiritual renewal. You may be extremely strong on your own, but you'll never be able to do everything God is calling you to without His power.

Fasting isn't weakness - it's recognizing weakness and seeking God's strength. That's actually the strength of our faith.

3. Fast with the Right Heart

Don't fast to impress people. Don't treat it like a religious competition. Fast because you want God, because you need Him, because your flesh has become too loud and you need to hear His voice more clearly.

Fasting Works Together with Prayer

Remember, fasting works together with prayer. When you fast, use that time to pray. Don't just remove food - make room for God. Fasting creates space in your schedule and sensitivity in your spirit to connect with Him in deeper ways.

Life Application

Fasting is a gateway through which God releases His supernatural power into your life. It's not magical - it's simply a tool that Jesus gave us to draw closer to Him and become more sensitive to the Holy Spirit's voice.

This week, consider starting with a simple fast. Maybe skip breakfast and lunch one day and spend that time in prayer instead. Make a plan, set a goal, and approach it with the right heart - not to impress anyone, but to connect with God.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Where have I lost my spiritual edge, and am I willing to use fasting as a tool to regain it?
  • Am I trying to power through my spiritual life in my own strength instead of depending on God?
  • If I were to fast, would my motivation be to draw closer to God or to impress others with my spirituality?
  • What breakthrough do I need in my life that might come through the spiritual discipline of fasting and prayer?

Remember, fasting breaks our routines so God can wake us up and move in our lives. If you want your edge back, if you want to stop living lukewarm, if you want that burning desire for God to return to your life, consider making fasting a regular part of your spiritual rhythm. The dull parts of your life don't have to stay dull - God has given you tools to sharpen your spiritual axe and experience His power in new ways.
