What Does God Say About Parenting?

Parenting With God as Your Partner: 4 Blessings Every Child Needs
Parenting is hard. Nobody has it all figured out, and most of us discover that pretty quickly once we're in it. But the Bible gives us a clear and practical picture of what it looks like to raise children well, and it all comes down to one big idea: when you parent with God as your partner, your kids are going to be blessed.
This isn't just for parents either. It applies to anyone who has influence over younger people, whether that's at work, at church, in your neighborhood, or in your family. Influence is the real topic here, and parenting is just one of the most powerful forms of it.
What Does the Bible Say About Raising Children?
In Luke chapter 2, we get a brief but powerful snapshot of Jesus' childhood. From the time He was eight days old to the age of twelve, this is all Scripture tells us:
"When Jesus' parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord, they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee. There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God's favor was on Him." - Luke 2:39-40 New Living Translation (NLT)
Four blessings show up in those two verses. And each one came through a partnership between God and Jesus' parents. That partnership is the model for us today.
Blessing #1: An Obedient Example
Why Your Kids Watch What You Do More Than What You Say
The passage opens by telling us that Joseph and Mary had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord. They were living obediently. That obedience was the first gift they gave Jesus.
When it comes to kids, more is caught than taught. Children are watching. They notice whether you are the same person at church that you are at home. They notice whether your faith is real or just a Sunday habit.
As a parent or an influencer, the honest question to ask yourself is: Am I living obediently to Scripture? Am I praying, worshiping, and behaving the way I want my children to behave?
If we are going to parent with God as our partner, we have to start by living obediently ourselves.
Blessing #2: Care for the Body
What Does Physical Health Have to Do With Faith?
The next blessing Jesus received was growing up healthy and strong. This was a partnership too. God provides health, but parents play a real role in shaping how children understand and care for their bodies.
Scripture is clear about why this matters:
"Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body." - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 New Living Translation (NLT)
Your physical body is where the Holy Spirit lives. That means how we treat our bodies is a spiritual matter. This includes diet, exercise, and sexuality.
What Is God's Design for Sexuality?
God's plan for sexuality is straightforward: one man and one woman joined together in the covenant of marriage. This is not about restriction for its own sake. There is a deeper reason behind it.
In the Old Testament, God described Himself as a husband and Israel as His bride. In the New Testament, Jesus is the bridegroom and the church is the bride. Marriage is a picture God painted of the relationship He wants with people. When that picture is distorted, it damages something sacred.
As the prophet Malachi wrote:
"Didn't the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and Spirit you are His. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth." - Malachi 2:15 New Living Translation (NLT)
Our children are our first and most important mission field. And we have to be the example. If we are not taking care of our own bodies, we cannot expect our children to take care of theirs.
The good news is that nothing we have done outside of God's plan is unforgivable. Every day is a new start. He brings healing and restoration to anyone who turns back to Him.
Blessing #3: Wisdom
How Do You Pass Wisdom On to Your Children?
Jesus was filled with wisdom. This did not happen by accident. Joseph and Mary were people of the Scriptures. They read it, they lived it, and they passed it on.
Wisdom is more valuable than any wealth. The book of Deuteronomy gives parents a clear picture of what this looks like in practice:
"Commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up." - Deuteronomy 11:18-19 New Living Translation (NLT)
The call is to be saturated in the Word of God. Let your home, your conversations, and your daily life be filled with it.
Is Bringing My Kids to Church Enough?
Bringing your children to church is good, but it is not enough on its own. Parents are meant to be the primary teachers. Church supports that, but it does not replace it.
When your kids ask hard questions about faith, do not shut them down. If you do not know the answer, say so, and then look for it together. There are more tools and resources available today than ever before. Kids are not looking for perfect answers. They are looking for parents who take their questions seriously.
And for younger people who are pushing back against going to church: the wisdom of God's Word is more valuable than you may realize right now. Trust the people who love you enough to fight for your faith.
Blessing #4: God's Favor
How Do You Receive God's Favor Over Your Family?
The fourth blessing Jesus received was God's favor. And this one flows naturally from the other three. When we live obediently, care for the temple of the Holy Spirit, and walk in the wisdom of God's Word, His favor follows.
"If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully keep all His commands that I am giving you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the world. You will experience all these blessings if you obey the Lord your God: Your towns and your fields will be blessed. Your children and your crops will be blessed." - Deuteronomy 28:1-4 New Living Translation (NLT)
God's favor does not mean a life without problems or challenges. It means that through every test and trial, His hand is on your life and on your family.
Life Application
A Challenge to Take Into This Week
This week, pick one of the four areas from this message and take one concrete step toward it. Maybe that means opening your Bible for even five minutes each morning. Maybe it means having an honest conversation with your child about faith. Maybe it means making a healthier choice for your body, or simply being more consistent in how you live out your faith at home versus everywhere else.
Parenting with God as your partner is not about being perfect. It is about being intentional. It is about showing up, staying in the Word, and trusting that God will fill in the gaps where you fall short.
Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
- Am I the same person at home that I am at church? What do the people closest to me actually see?
- In which of the four areas (obedient example, care for the body, wisdom, or God's favor) do I most need to grow right now?
- What is one practical step I can take this week to partner more intentionally with God in my role as a parent, mentor, or influencer?
God wants to bless your family. He wants to bless your influence. And He is ready to be your partner in it, if you will let Him.
